In March 2041, Michael Hale leaves Earth on the Tamsin, bound for a star twenty-two light-years away. His son, Theo, is nine. They promise to keep talking, but every message takes longer to arrive than the last: a second, then a minute, then a year. In June 2088 the final message comes in, sent from the star twenty-two years earlier. Theo is fifty-six now, older than his father, and before he plays it, he is going to listen to all of the others, in order, from the beginning.
